Flexible cordless tool for one-hand installation

July 22, 2022

Desoutter launched a genuine one-hand offset screwdriver for the assembly of critical screw connections.

The new EABS combines small dimensions with high performance and thus offers maximum ergonomics and productivity in the smallest of spaces. The cordless offset screwdriver is up to 36% shorter than comparable tools. Screwing data is recorded and documented in real time.

In the automotive and aerospace industries, at suppliers, in plant and equipment construction or in general mechanical engineering, there is always the issue of how to safely install connecting elements that are difficult to access and critical for functionally or safety - for example on control units, gearboxes, airbags, brakes, electrical or electronic components. Such screw connections are often a challenge for the worker and the production team, especially when a free hand is required to support or to hold the workpiece or a nut.

Desoutter has developed the extremely compact and powerful, battery-operated EABS-type offset screwdriver for these circumstances. The tools were designed for ergonomic operation with just one hand, offer great flexibility and can also reach screws that are difficult to access. With a length of only 30 cm or thereabouts, and a weight of only 1 kg, the sensor-supported EABS simplifies many assembly processes, allows the screwing data to be documented and thus increases productivity.

Light, fast and powerful

A total of ten models with hexagonal or square drives cover torques between 1.5 and 24 Newton metres (Nm) at speeds of up to 1,500 rpm. Depending on the variant, the EABS is 20% to 36% shorter than conventional offset screwdrivers. The tools can be operated with both 18 volt and 36 volt batteries. Users no longer have to choose between workplace ergonomics and productivity; because both variants have the same characteristics. This means that the EABS screwdrivers offer maximum performance even when using the lighter 18 V battery. Thanks to the option of inserting the battery in two positions, the user always finds the optimum tool balance for himself and the application with the best possible access to the screw hole.

Screw holes are perfectly illuminated by means of a front LED in the immediate vicinity of the drive. After completing the screw connection, this light changes colour: Depending on the result of the screw connection, the component is now illuminated in red or green. In addition, a status LED on the side makes the tightening result immediately visible from all other directions, regardless of how the user is holding the tool. The wear-free, dust-tight start button with its low holding force of just 0.8 of a Newton (N) allows almost fatigue-free work.

Process optimisation and data backup

The EABS can be operated autonomously in stand-alone mode and as part of a radio network. In the latter case, the tool communicates safely in real time via a WLAN interface. To do this, it can be connected to Desoutter’s Connect platform or to the CVI3 vision control unit. The screwdriver is quickly and safely connected to the Connect platform using the integrated RFID chip. The connection takes place within ten seconds without additional hardware. This ensures that setting up and exchanging tools is carried out safely and prevents incorrect settings.

Thanks to real-time recording, all data can be securely stored in a database and can be accessed securely via an internet browser. The results are provided in the form of curves and statistical reports and can be viewed quickly and easily with just a click of the mouse.

The radio connection can be desactivated and the tool operated independently for use in stand-alone mode. Up to 10,000 tightening results can be saved in the integrated memory and later evaluated using Desoutter's CVI analyser software.

The tightening programmes can be designed flexibly. In freely programmable steps (such as finding, threading, tightening, loosening etc.), users can set up complex assembly processes with different control and monitoring variables.

Accessories, service and maintenance

The EABS screwdriver can be safely and ergonomically placed in the DTH AKKU tool holder from Desoutter. It holds the tools with both 18 and 36 volt batteries, and with the batteries in both positions. This enables the tool to be gripped easier. In addition, the workers can also place their spare batteries on the tool holder and thus keep the workplace tidy.

Desoutter offers its customers various service and maintenance solutions, especially for the EABS, for maximum performance right from the start, as well as better cost efficiency, improved availability and productivity. For example, the fast, high-quality and delay-free installation ensures high tool accuracy and optimum commissioning.

If you have decided on an EABS, there are three maintenance levels available at Desoutter. This provides users with exactly the level of safety they need for their production. The "Basic Care" package includes flexible, preventive maintenance with countermeasures at a fixed price, including wearing parts and remuneration for work carried out. “Smart Care” offers customers a preventive maintenance plan at a fixed price including countermeasures and repairs. Maintenance is adjusted depending on the use of tools, and all wearing parts are replaced at the right time. And if you want to be completely unworried and maximise the efficiency of your tools, choose the "Peace of Mind" variant. In addition to an optimised, preventive maintenance plan including countermeasures and repairs, this also includes technical support for troubleshooting, as well as the further training of employees.
